Pieksämäki region

Pieksämäki region is situated right in the middle of Finland, some 300 km north of Helsinki, the nation´s capital. The region is rich in lakes offering excellent possibilities for aquatic outdoor activities, canoeing and cruising on inland waters or perhaps just rowing on a lake in the seemingly endless summer evenings, or ice-fishing through thick ice with the spring sun shining on the snowdrifts. Pure nature at its best. The region has a population of some 23 000. 18% of jobs are in primary production, 23% in the processing industries, and 59% in the service industry.
Pieksämäki town

The town of Pieksämäki is the region´s commercial center, a busy railway junction. In Pieksämäki, various services feature among the main employers. Sport and cultural activities are actively pursued. The Poleeni Cultural Centre is widely known for its selection of programmes. Pieksämäki has many schools and attracts students from other parts of Finland as well. Being a town of parks, on a lake, Pieksämäki offers outstanding opportunities for hiking and biking in nature.
Pieksämäki rural commune

Pieksämäki rural commune is an active municipality at the spearhead of local development. It is the home of several successful enterprises undergoing vigorous development, making Pieksämäki region better known, both nationally and internationally. The famous semi-finished bakery products from the Moilanen Bakery are exported to many European countries. For tourists, this active municipality offers a wide variety of holiday choices - in a log cabin or on a farm, for example.
Jäppilä

Jäppilä with its many lakes is a pleasant place to live. Both small-scale wood processing and tourism are undergoing major development. The fishing at Lake Kivinen is favoured by amateur fishermen, and Lake Tuomiojärvi is a waterfowl lake of national renown. Savonmuan Inari bears a resemblance to the scenery of Lapland and offers a new dimension to experiencing nature.

Virtasalmi

Virtasalmi is a scenic rural community with active Four-milling and mining industries. However, almost half of the municipality´s population gain their livelihood from agriculture and forestry. Among the new assets are the cultivation of special plants, as well as the outdoor experience and nature travel. The Virtasalmi Motopark is Finland´s most versatile motor sport centre. The Majavareitti (Beaver Route) is an interesting experience, suitable for family canoeing.



Pieksämäki rural commune, Jäppilä and Virtasalmi have joined since 1.1.2004. The name of the new commune is
Pieksänmaa.
